How to have a Safe and a Happy Holi..

0

Hello everyone, Happy Holi.. Every year, after Holi celebrations many people come to my clinic with multiple complaints. Here are few things you should keep in mind so that you have a fun filled and sickness-free Holi.

Avoid change of temperatures –

It’s already quite hot these days, so avoid sudden change of temperatures, like being in the sun and then jumping in the pool, pouring cold water on yourself, eating ice creams, cold drinks, thandai. Sitting in the AC and going in sun.

Skin care/ Hair care –

Preferably play only with Gulal. Don’t use strong colors, chemicals, sprays. Oil your body and hair before going to play. Do not use excess shampoo after playing, it will make your hair dry.

People with skin diseases such as – Urticaria, Psoriasis, Eczema, Fungal infections should play very carefully.

Drink lots and lots of water..

Along with playing with water, drink lots of water too. Most of people get affected with headache, fever because of heat, exhaustion and dehydration.

Special care for children –

Use only herbal/non toxic colors for them. Explain to them that keep their eyes and mouth close when someone applies color. Children tend to get dehydrated very fast, make sure they drink enough liquids. Avoid chocolate, cold drink, ice cream, fast food. Children with skin allergy, asthma shouldn’t play with colors. Put cotton plugs in the child’s ear.

Special care for Elders –

Make sure they don’t slip on the watery floor. Play with herbal colors. Their skin is sensitive, don’t use strong chemicals.

Avoid common pools/ beaches –

So many people in one pool. Lots of infections get transmitted. People come with rash, fungal infections, urinary infections, cough and pneumonia. Avoid such infected water, it is full of germs.

Don’t play Holi..

I’m serious.. Not just from health point of view.. but from ecological point of view.. we shouldn’t burn so many wood in this era of global warming. We shouldn’t use so much of water in playing Holi, when so many in the world are dying from lack of water.

When to seek help of a doctor –

If the colors have entered the eyes causing pain and watering. Fever. Vomiting, diarrhea, severe headache. Excessive crying of a child.

Have a safe and happy Holi. Do remember the purpose why we celebrate these festivals.. It is not just a day of empty celebrations, colors, loud music, food and enjoyment. It is a day of remember to burn the evil in ourselves, wash away our sins with water and have a colorful happy life.
