0

Hello.. welcome. Today’s topic is – why does my child falls ill so often? How to make sure he stays healthy for long.

(This is the third post of Child Health series. Kindly read the Child Health – 1, if you haven’t read it yet)

Health is very critical balance between the body’s immune system and the external factors (Infections, environment, nutrition). A number of things can cause, this balance to shift and may lead to the child falling sick.

I will discuss a few of the commonest reasons why a child can fall sick.

  • Medication – Over-use/under-use/misuse.
  • Food – overeating/under-eating/wrong eating
  • Weather – Summer/rainy/winter
  • Trips/ Vacations.

Medication – Over-use/under-use/misuse

This is one the most common reason why your child falls sick.

  • Overuse – parents give medication for the smallest of the complaints- minor sneezing, minor fever, etc. Let the body learn to heal itself. Don’t medicate on the smallest thing. Take the doctor’s opinion, and let him decide.
  • Underuse – many parents, don’t complete the full course of medicine, this is very bad practice. Medicines like antibiotics and steroids should be followed exactly as per the doctor’s advice.
  • Misuse – few parents don’t visit the doctor at all, and repeat the medicines given for the previous fever!!! The doctor needs to check your child and find out the location, and intensity of the disease. The dose also varies according to the present weight of the child. So please do not self-medicate or take medicines from the pharmacist.

Food – overeating/undereating/wrong eating

  • Overeating – childhood obesity is on the rise, children are given junk food, burgers, pizzas, cold drinks, chocolates – all this leads to a fat child, which the parents feel is a healthy child, but in fact he is very weak and prone to many diseases.
  • Undereating – few kids are very fussy eaters, they don’t like home food, parents are tired too, they don’t know what to give him. (To read more – Healthy food for your child)
  • Wrong eating – healthy food is replacing tasty food. This is ok in adults, but kids have growing bodies, and they need a lot of healthy food for proper growth.

Weather – Summer/Rainy/Winter.

Weather is a big factor in causing illness. Each weather gets along its specific complaints. You need to protect your child from it, to prevent him from falling ill.

  • Summer – excessive dehydration, sun exhaustion, headache – all this decrease immunity – and can lead to infections. Icecreams, golas, ice candies , cold water in this weather should be avoided.
  • Rainy – getting drenched in rains, walking in flooded waters, eating roadside or hotel food.
  • Winter – Exposure to cold, icecreams, change of weather, can increase asthma attacks, certain skin problems.
  • Change of weather – Most change of weather leads to growth of new viruses, and fall in immunity, one has to be extra careful in these times.

Trips/Vacations – Most of the kids fall ill during trips, and multiple reasons lead to this. Change of weather, erratic food and sleeping habits, lack of rest, eating out almost daily, unrestricted ice creams, chocolates etc.

There is a lot more to say, I can go on and on.. But I will stop here, as my posts get too long. If you have any more doubts, please feel free to contact me. You can comment below, Whatsapp me, call me; I’m always happy to help.
