0

Hello everyone, hope you all are in good health. Our today’s health post is regarding ‘Winter Diseases’. It will be a two part series. The winter is about to start, weather is changing; which will lead to lot of new infections coming up and there are increased chances of people falling sick. Hitaarth Clinic strongly believes in prevention of illness, rather than being ignorant and falling sick and then going to the Doctor. That is the main reason for these Health posts (#HitOpdesh) – Education of the people about simple things that can prevent illness and keep them healthy.

With this changing weather, what kind of illnesses are common?

  • Mostly there is increased chances of Respiratory illness – Cold, cough; Fever; Bronchitis, Tonsillitis, Pneumonia, Sinusitis;
  • Increase in joint pains
  • Increase in Skin diseases
  • Hair fall

In this post we will be dealing with Respiratory illnesses, the rest of the things will be covered in our next post.

Who are most likely to fall sick in this weather?

  • Children
  • Elderly people
  • Pregnant women
  • People with major illnesses – Diabetes, Blood pressure, Kidney diseases, Asthma.
  • People with addictions – Smoking, alcohol, hukka.

Common Signs & symptoms –

Most of symptoms are related to Respiratory troubles –

  • Cold, runny nose, blocked nose.
  • Dry Cough,
  • Throat pain
  • Chest pain
  • Cough with expectoration.
  • Fever
  • Body pain
  • Watering from eyes
  • Headache

When to see the doctor –

  • Most of the illnesses are Viral, and might subside with simple home treatments – steam, warm water gargles, rest, nutritious home food.
  • But if the complaints remain even after 2 days, please visit your doctor.
  • Do not self medicate – I have seen patients taking antibiotics by themselves, stopping the course mid way, taking nasal sprays, cough syrups, medicine from chemists etc – these things really harm your body, when taken without a doctor’s opinion.

Prevention –

I always stress upon the prevention of illness. These are the list of things one should avoid –

  • Chocolates,
  • Cold drinks
  • Ice creams,
  • Colored things – chocolates, liquids, food
  • Avoid exposure to changing temperatures
  • Avoid early morning walks (6am)
  • If one family member is down with a viral infection – chances of it spreading to others increases, make sure everyone takes proper care.
  • Avoid outside food, esp roadside juices, salads, fruits, paani puri etc.

Be alert. Eat wisely. Stay fit. Stay Healthy. Prevention is better than cure.
