What should I give my child to eat?
My child doesn’t like home food, he likes junk and outside food, what to do?
(Hello, welcome this is the second post of Child Health series. I would recommend you to first read the Child Health – 1, if you haven’t read it yet.)
Schools are starting soon.. One of the biggest headaches for mothers is what to give in tiffin?? Or what to give the child when he comes from school?
If you give roti-veg or daal rice they won’t eat. And if you give him biscuits and bread they will love it, but that’s unhealthy.
So you should try and give food which are healthy and tasty. Tiffin/evening snacks are imp meal of the day, make sure u give good nutritious food only.
Things you can give (Tasty & Healthy) –
- Parathas – methi (thepla), gobhi, mixed vegetable etc.
- One homemade sweet everyday – chikki, mohanthal, goad papdi, khajur paak, adadiya, different laddus ( this is very imp)
- 4-5 pieces of Dry fruits – Almond, walnut, dates etc.
- Roti-veg, biryani, any other rice dish.
- Fried idli, dosa, dhokla (white/khaman, utappa, sprouts, pudla, shira, laapsi.
- Chana chat, puran poli, vegetable roll (like frankie)
- Nachni rotla/bhakhri in the form of a pizza
- I have named a few dishes, u can think of many more. Most Indian dishes have some healthy ingredient. So try and stick to traditional meals, than Chinese, Italian, American etc.
Few more tips –
- Don’t give too much of milk to the child. Milk is good, but it fills the stomach easily, so the child won’t eat other things.
- Daal and vegetable both should always be include in lunch and dinner. U may skip the roti or rice but never daal and veg.
- The child should eat at least 1 fruit per day.
- 2-3 pieces of different dry fruits are a must (No cashew or salted nuts)
- Be stern with the child, he has to complete what is offered to him. No distraction by TV or Mobile. Don’t succumb to demands of the child.
- Practice what you preach – Children follow what they see. If the parents don’t eat healthy food, the child will also not eat. You also have to eat the karela ki sabzi, then your child will eat too.
Things to strictly avoid (Tasty but unhealthy) –
Chips, noodles, pasta, bread, cheese, biscuits, farsan, cold drinks, chocolates, milkshakes, juices, jam, butter, burgers, pizza, French fries.
